Bend the knee to 45 degrees, the ideal angle for fixing with a bandage. Start from the patella and then go up and down by turns. The leg should be tightly wrapped and widely covered from mid-thigh down to near the ankle. Because the knee is bent at 45 degrees, the bandage still covers well when straightening the leg. We have been practicing this method over 40 years with no bad effects reported. If the back of the knee is rubbed while walking, we recommend placing cotton or gauze inside the wrapping to prevent it. A couple times of practice is all it takes to be able to fix it well.

The process may not be easy but please recognize the goal while considering the treatment duration and the bandage treatment method.

Ideal quantity of non-elastic bandage:

  1. ●Up to 60 kg → 1 roll
  2. ●Up to 70 kg → 1 roll and a half
  3. ●Over 70 kg → 2 rolls

( ※ 1 roll of non-elastic bandage is about 9 m.)

Make sure to bend the knee at 45 degrees when fixing.

Put the cotton around the disk to prevent from being rubbed then start wrapping.

Wrap the bandage in layers, going up and down by turns 5 to 6 times.

Make sure it is tight and the leg is covered from mid-thigh to near the ankle.

Warp an elastic bandage at the same width of non-elastic bandages. Do not stretch out the elastic bandage when wrapping!

Advantage of bandage treatment:

  • ① You can make non-elastic bandage by yourself to save money.
  • ② It is like a well-fit movable plaster cast.
  • ③ The movable area remains movable so the muscles are used naturally.
  • ④ Highly absorptive and hygienic.
  • ⑤ You can wrap it yourself without time consuming doctor visits.

Disadvantage of bandage treatment:

  • ① Back of the knee is easily irritated by the rubbing bandages.
  • ② The leg pulsates strongly for a couple minutes- which is a normal reaction.
  • ③ It is time-consuming to put on and take off.
  • ④ Some training and practice are needed to do it well.
  • ⑤ The leg looks exaggerated.

Knee supporter in combination

When you have difficulty wrapping the bandage every day, we recommend to wrap with one third the amount of non-elastic bandage and then use the knee supporter over it.

Other key points

  • ●Wearing with bandage is unnecessary while sleeping. It should help fight against gravity load during the daytime, while it should be taken off during rest at night.
  • ●Normally, the leg pulsates strongly for 4 to 5 minutes after fixing with bandages. This may be because the tightened knee naturally tries to get rid of unknown substance as defense reaction. It starts pulsating normally again afterwards.
  • ●Do not flex the knees but keep them bent slightly in daily life- meaning do not depend on bone while standing but on muscle. This will help the muscle to protect the knee.
  • ●One of the initial symptoms of osteoarthritis of knee is that the pain decreases or disappears after walking for a while. This is because the knee and the body got warm by walking and the painlessness is only temporary.
    Mistaking that walking helps recovery or that sports improve knee condition will continue to experience the pain and relief, ultimately the pain remains and deformation progresses.
  • ●If your knee condition doesn’t improve after 3 weeks of bandage treatment, it is important to review the way of fixing, the quantity of bandage, and improve understanding of the bandage treatment.
  • ●Bandage treatment doesn’t cause a decline in muscles because the joint remains movable by fixing it at 45 degrees and you are still forced to use it while walking under lightened gravity load. Also, exercise limitation due to the wide wrapped bandage trains muscles in daily life.
  • ●Landing from heel with the knees stretched out causes knee pain.
